ENAYETPUR (West Midnapore): The Maoist brigade, which was on a killing spree, has met its first ever challenge from CPM since the Lalgarh upsurge in
November 2008. A small bunch of CPM cadre, outnumbered five to one, failed a major Maoist offensive in Enayetpur, eight km from Midnapore town.
Locals say at least 15 people from either side fell to the bullets. After a fierce five-hour gunbattle, the Maoists were forced to retreat. District CPM leaders denied any of their men were killed. Home secretary Ardhendu Sen refused to confirm any death, saying no body was found. The CPM’s defensive tactics resembled ‘Salwa Judum’ (anti-Maoist) drive in Chhattisgarh. The fightback came as a boost to CPM cadre, some of whom had severed ties with the party in fear of the rising Maoist terror in Jangalmahal, comprising three districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
It is unclear who started the fighting. According to some villagers in Enayetpur and neighbouring areas like Palasia and Bagerpukur, the first hint of trouble came around 2.30 pm on Monday. ‘‘Like other days armed CPM men were patrolling the roads and village lanes when they got a message that Maoist guerrillas were gathering in Lalitashole forest, bordering Enayetpur. An armed group rushed towards the forest border, firing on the run. Bullets hit three villagers, including two women,’’ said Buddha Bera of Bagerpukur village. Angry tribals rushed out of their homes with traditional weapons and marched towards the CPM party office at Enayetpur around 5 pm. Armed Maoists led the 4,000-odd strong brigade.
‘‘Guns started booming from the party office as soon as the cadre spotted the huge Maoist party. The Maoists fired back. The villagers retreated and Maoists assault squads, including women, who were hiding in the forests, moved in to join the firefight. A huge volume of fire was directed at the CPM party office,’’ said Bakul Rana, who lives close to the Enayetpur party office.
